A recent study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that children who watch TV for more than 2 hours a day are likely to be overweight or obese.

The study followed nearly 5,000 children from the UK and found that those who watched TV for more than two hours a day were 34% more likely to be overweight and 27% more likely to be obese. The risk of being overweight increased by 13% per hour they spent in front of the television.

Yet, it was unclear if weight gain was caused by sitting too much or eating too much while watching TV, or both.

October 17, 2008 update:A group of researchers at Harvard's School of Public Health found that watching too much television can make children more susceptible to obesity.

The study, published in the April issue of the journal Obesity, followed 37 adults monitored for about two years by researchers at Harvard and the University of Alabama.

Participants started out with an average weight of 173 pounds and an average body mass index of 21. After a two-year period where they logged how much TV they watched each day, their weight increased by 9.3 pounds and their BMI increased by 2 points.

The researchers did find that participants who were more obese gained less weight than those who were not obese. But they also found that those who watched the most television by far gained the most weight.

Those who watched more than 11 hours a day gained 2.5 pounds and their BMI increased by 0.7 points more than those who watched less than one hour a day.

"The findings suggest that television viewing is associated with weight gain and obesity," said Mara Dillard, lead author of the study and assistant professor at

Harvard's School of Public Health, in a press release. "The results were not surprising to us, as we already had seen evidence in other research that media use is associated with an increased risk of obesity."

Other studies have shown links between children's TV watching habits and obesity as well.A study led by researchers at the University of Minnesota and published in

December in the journal Pediatrics found that obese girls were 83 percent less likely to be physically active if they watched more than 6 hours a day of TV, while non-obese girls who watched more than six hours of TV a day were 91 percent more likely to eat fast food.

The effect was even stronger for boys: Obese boys cut their physical activity time by nearly 20 percent if they watched more than six hours of TV in a day, while non-obese boys who spent the same amount of time watching TV ate three times as much fast food.
